The castle was built by the king Philip II of Macedonia around 340 BC at an altitude of 627m, 4km SE from the deserted village Kalyva in Xanthi prefecture.

It was used by the Macedonians and the Romans. It became also part of the fortification network that was developed by emperorJustinian, so it was in use also during the Middle-Byzantine period.

Access
Approach to the monument:
Access from the village Neochori (36km from Stavroupoli). A paved road 9km leads to the fortress through the village Ano Ioniko.
Entrance:
Τhe monument is accessible to the public, after contact with the 31st Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities (+30 25410 51003, +30 25410 51783)
