Few Remains
|
Few remains of a Late-Byzantine monastery tower in the Stomio area, a little further out, to the northwest, from Nea Kallikrateia, Chalkidiki, next to a chapel of Saint Tryphon.
History
The area west of Kallikrateia, including part of modern Kallikrateia, was a metochi of the monastery of Xenophon of Mount Athos. The name of the metochi was Stomion.
A document of the monastery from 1338 states that a tower was built to protect its large metochi of “Stomio”.
In 1345 the tower was surrounded by an outer wall, which means that it had the form of a small fortress. According to monastic documents, at that time, the locals took refuge in this fort in case of danger.
Structure, Fortification & Buildings
The tower was standing until the 1930s.
Today it is difficult to spot. All the external walls are preserved at a very low height, at most 0.80m.
The dimensions of the tower were 6.5✖6m.
