Traces of a small fortification on the neck of a peninsula west of Vourvourou, Chalkidiki, north of the settlement “Galini” belonging to the community of Agios Nikolaos. This is a medieval wall of undetermined date, the purpose of which was the defensive protection and the blockade of the elevated tip of the peninsula.
The local name of the fortification (and of the peninsula itself) is “Mega Teichos” (meaning “Great Wall”, source: Papaggelos).
A section of the wall, approximately 20m long, can be seen today on the northwestern side of the narrowest point of the peninsula, while its course can be traced over a total length of 50m. Its original length should have corresponded approximately to the width of the peninsula at this point, i.e. almost 160 m. The wall was probably not continuous, as in some places the fortification would have been supplemented by the massive rocks of the hill.
Part of the wall must have been lost due to the development and construction (with villas) of the peninsula.
The surviving section is built with coarse granite stones of the area without binding mortar. It has a maximum height of 2.50m and a thickness of around 2.20m.
