A small Byzantine fort or tower on a low hill southeast of the village of Aisymi in the prefecture of Evros. The hill is located a little further south of the chapel of Archangel Michael.
A modern bunker of the Greek Army has been built on the same hill, which appears abandoned, but is not from World War II or the Civil War. It must be quite new and during its construction part of the medieval fort must have been destroyed, but we do not know to what extent.
We do not know anything about the history of the Byzantine fort. From the construction style we conclude that it probably dates back to the Middle Byzantine Period.
It should be noted that the present-day village of Aisymi has no relation to the ancient Aisymi which was located in the region of the Strymon River.
Structure, Fortification & Buildings
The dimensions of the fort are 8✖7 meters. The thickness of the wall is 2 meters. It is preserved at a low height that does not exceed 1.5 meters.
An ancient wall with 3 concentric fortification enclosures existed at the site. The first of the ancient enclosures was at the highest point, with a length of about 90m. The second was lower and at a distance of about 15-20m from the first. The trace of the perimeter of these two enclosures is visible along almost its entire length by the continuous stone pile.
Only a part of the third enclosure is visible on the bushy western side of the hill, 70-100m lower.
