A small French fort on a hill at the edge of the southwestern arm of the Gulf of Vathy in Ithaca.
This fort, together with the fort opposite, on the northeastern side of the bay, the Loutsa bastion, protected the entrance to the bay, which is an excellent natural harbor.
Ithaca, like the rest of the Ionian Islands, was under French rule during the period 1807-1815, based on the Franco-Russian Treaty of Tilsit which ceded the Ionian Islands State to Napoleon. During this time, the French managed to build a few forts, one of which was the castle on this page.
We know from other cases (such as Gouvia or on the islet of Vido) that the French immediately proceeded to repair and build fortifications in the Ionian Islands. Therefore, both forts at the mouth of the Gulf of Vathy must have been built at the beginning of the French period, that is, in 1807 or 1808.
The castle must have recently (few years ago) undergone restoration and landscaping work, but we do not know more about it.
