Castle-cave in a deserted mountainous area 8km west of Argos, 3.5km east of Vrousti and 2km NW of Chouni in Argolis.
Access is via the road to Vrousti, which just before the village branches off into a rough dirt road that leads below the cave. There is also an uncharted path from Chouni, suitable for adventurous hikers.
History
Caves of this type in Peloponnese have been hermitages since the Byzantine Period. Gradually, various elements such as chapels and rudimentary fortifications were added to these hermitages. In most cases, this happened around the 17th-18th century when the hermitages were transformed into dens for kleftes.
During the Greek War of Independence of 1821, the hermitages were used as refuge for the local population.
The specific hermitage/castle-cave of Agia Roouseli must have a similar history, although we do not know many details. We know it was the den of the warlord Giannakos Dagres around 1821.
